Apple has today announced a new iPod Touch variant, a 16GB 5th-gen iPod Touch without a rear-facing camera. This new model has been released on the Apple Store website, and is available for $229, a $70 drop from the 32GB 5th-gen model which does feature a camera.

Unlike the 32GB model, this new variant will also go without any colour options, the only choice being a silver-backed model. In addition to this, the 16GB variant will not have an Apple “loop” lanyard hook.

This iPod Touch takes over the 4th-gen model as the cheapest iPod Touch, which has been discontinued following the release of this new model. Therefore, the only iPod Touches available have 4-inch displays and Lightning connectors, which Apple are really pushing for app-development wise and accessory support respectively.

Although for the money, the 32GB model certainly looks like the better value, with a $70 bump netting you twice the storage capacity and a rear-facing camera.

Nonetheless, this model does now exist as the cheapest iPod Touch, and for those looking for a cheaper entry point, or an iPod Touch without a rear-facing camera (for some reason), this looks to be the best option.
